The Courage to Jump In

The Courage to Jump In

By Dr. Liron Gamzeh

This summer, I’ve spent a lot of time sitting beside a swimming pool watching my daughter, Ayla.

She’s become an outstanding swimmer, and what makes me proud isn’t simply how well she swims—it’s how I’ve watched her grow. Every lesson, every lap, every challenge has made her a little stronger and a little more confident. Seeing her embrace something difficult and gradually master it has been one of the highlights of my summer.

What makes it especially meaningful is that swimming has always held a very different place in my own life.

When I was a young boy, I had a terrifying experience in the water. I would not be here today if it weren’t for my older brother, David, who saved my life. Because of that day, I never became a confident swimmer. I can get by, but I’ve always carried a healthy respect for the water and never developed the comfort that many people have.

So every time I watch Ayla dive confidently into the pool, I find myself smiling. She’s doing something that I never truly learned to love.

As parents, we spend so much time teaching our children. But one of the beautiful surprises of parenthood is realizing how often they teach us. Watching Ayla has reminded me that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the willingness to move forward despite it. Growth happens one small step at a time, and confidence is earned through persistence, not perfection.

It has also reminded me how grateful I am—for my brother David, for my family, and for the gift of watching my children grow into people who are stronger in ways I never expected.

Every day in our office, I have the privilege of caring for patients of every age. I see parents bringing in their children, grandparents bringing in their grandchildren, and entire families who have trusted us for years. Moments like these remind me that the greatest part of dentistry isn’t just caring for teeth—it’s caring for people through every stage of life.

As summer continues, I hope you find time to slow down and appreciate the people who have shaped your life, the ones who stood beside you when you needed them most, and the younger generation that’s inspiring all of us in ways we never imagined.

From my family to yours, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives. Wishing you a safe, healthy, and memorable rest of the summer.

Warmly,
